The bed is a temporary spawn point. Breaking the bed will restore the original spawn. The compass will always point to the original point you entered the map. There may be some mods which will allow you to set the location the compass will point to, but by default vanilla gameplay there is currently no way to change the compass heading.
It's distance from which it can find the centre from is limited, but it's better than having to use something like single player commands or mcedit to change your original spawn point (which is the only way to change the compass's direction).
And starting in 1.14, world spawn can only be at the center of a chunk, so depending on where within a chunk yoru bed is located, you may not be able to get the compass to point EXACTLY at your bed, although it should be close enough for most purposes.
Sleeping in a bed will change your respawn point, but will not change the original spawn point and the location the compass points towards. Other than being used to find the spawn point, compasses can also be used to craft a blank map when combined with eight pieces of paper.
My compass was sort of useless. I got some sugar canes and wood and made paper, and turned my compass into a map. But the map didn't show the area where the village is, it showed the area where i originally spawned. so i wandered around trying to find my way and got even more lost. this time i wasn't even showing on the map.
In single player a compass "always" points to your "original" spawn point. The only way to get back to last bed you slept in instantly is to die (hopefully packing your stuff in a chest first). Sometimes a creeper will help you find your bed.
No, beds set your spawn point if you die, compasses are used to direct you back to your first spawn point, on your first day. And no, you can't reset the compasses spawn if you move your bed. That is also why it is recommended that you put your main base near your original spawn point, because otherwise a compass is largely useless, and that means no long range exploring. I realize the compass is always supposed to do this (or so I heard discussed), and it is not supposed to point to the bed that you last slept in, which does in fact change my spawn point to that location. So bed spawning is fine. But the compass no longer points to the proper location.
Hello, I have been playing Minecraft for a few months now and have noticed that my compass is no longer pointing to my original spawn point. I built my house not too far from where I spawned so I have relied heavily on it when out exploring to get back home.
